Atmospheric pollution from sugarcane burning
Another consequence of burning sugarcane is that it affects wildlife and the ecosystem.
Palmira is
one of the main sources of income from agriculture, including the production of
sugar, which is carried out through a process that includes the burning of
sugarcane, polluting the air and spreading the ashes over the city.
Sugar is
one of the most important resources for the country's economy, but the
different processes that must be carried out to make the final product have negative
effects on the environment, and the practice that causes carbon dioxide
emissions is the burning of sugar cane.
We are sure
that the world is going through an ecological crisis; for many years we have
been talking about the damage caused by man and other factors that will have
consequences in the future and the immense sugarcane production and its burning
degrade the environment generating atmospheric contamination. It also affects
human health; due to the ash and gases generated, people may suffer from
different diseases. I think the sugar mills should consider the effects that
all this burning of sugar cane produces, both for the atmosphere and for the
people and it is necessary to stop this process.
An alternative to avoid burning sugar cane is Green Harvesting, which uses specialized machinery to cut and lift the cane into small pieces, thus avoiding the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
I believe that it is necessary to take care of environmental resources and to have responsibility with respect to the consequences that are generated in the long and short term by the burning of sugar cane. I agree that including new technologies in the sugar process is costly, but in my opinion, it is worth it than to fight with the consequences of these processes (such as atmospheric contamination).
